Ninja Theory’s action-adventure game Hellblade 2 was released in May 2024 with great expectations. However, not much information was shared about sales figures. Finally, thanks to Circana’s latest sales data, a clearer picture of the game’s performance has emerged.
Hellblade 2, which was criticized for its brevity, did not reach the expected sales figures
According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, Hellblade 2 ranked 37th in terms of overall dollar sales in May 2024. On Xbox Series consoles, it ranked 21st. The lack of a physical release contributed to this low ranking.
Hellblade 2’s availability on Xbox Game Pass at launch was evident in the game’s engagement data. The game ranked 12th among monthly active users on Xbox, just behind Fallout 76, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Apex Legends and Forza Horizon 5.
Piscatella shared this sales information on X to explain why Hellblade 2 didn’t appear on the major charts. Xbox and Ninja Theory haven’t shared much information about the game’s sales figures since its debut. This has led fans to speculate on Steam user data and data from other sources. Gamesindustry.biz publisher Chris Dring noted that the game failed to crack the top 100 on the European sales charts and that May was a deadly month for game sales.
Hellblade 2, the sequel to Ninja Theory’s acclaimed action-adventure game, was announced shortly after Xbox acquired the studio in 2018 and finally released this year. While the game was revolutionary in terms of digital rendering, it was criticized for its short story. It also had poor gameplay.
Ghost of Tsushima, meanwhile, returned to the number one spot with its Steam debut, while Call of Duty dominated the sales charts for both Xbox and PlayStation. But overall, it was a challenging month for all three consoles as hardware spending recorded double-digit declines.
Xbox is looking at what it can do for the rest of 2024. First-party titles like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Avowed are on Xbox’s release schedule. What do you think? Please share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
